Jonathan Hamrick, a graduate student hailing from West Virginia, transformed 40 cents into $532,969 this week through a spin on an online slot machine from BetMGM. That’s more than 1.3 million times his initial wager. The funds will settle his loans for tuition and housing.
“I was sitting in class and I figured I had a couple of extra minutes to get on and play,” Hamrick said in a statement provided to Casino.org by BetMGM, the iGaming and online sportsbook platform of MGM Resorts International.
“So I logged on, hit spin a couple of times … clicked the button, and it said, ‘Congratulations.’”
The title of the game was Bison Fury, an online slot with five reels that features a theme based on the American wilderness.
Because his jackpot surpassed $500,000, BetMGM gifted Hamrick a complimentary trip to Las Vegas, featuring accommodations at ARIA, where he received the traditional oversized photo-op check.
“I was in disbelief for a while, but once it hit my account, it started getting real,” Hamrick said. “I don’t have to be in debt anymore… Grad school is expensive, and I had to take out loans. Now, I don’t have that burden.”
Bison Fury was created by BetMGM, which is part of Entain, the gaming conglomerate based in the Isle of Man that holds a 50% stake in BetMGM's US operations.
In June, as reported by BetMGM, another online casino player performed even better than Hamrick at Bison Fury. A Michigan resident who chose to stay anonymous won a progressive slot jackpot of $1 million with a 40-cent wager.
BetMGM's online gaming applications can be found in Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The online sportsbook of the platform is active in 22 states along with Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico.
