The gambling activity at the temporary Bally's casino at Chicago's Medinah Temple reached previously unheard levels in May.
Players at the Bally's casino, which is located at 600 N. Wabash Avenue, close to the Magnificent Mile, won more than $11.73 million last month, according to the Illinois Gaming Control Board (IGCB). Table games brought in $4.75 million, while slots brought in $6.98 million.
With its $11.7 million take, May was the highest month ever for Bally's Chicago casino. In September of last year, the 35,000-square-foot gambling complex opened.
"Our continued growth demonstrates Bally’s Chicago’s popularity with locals and tourists alike, aligns with our community engagement initiatives, and supports our dedication to responsible gaming,” said Mark Wong, vice president and general manager.
According to Wong, the Bally's Chicago casino is still accepting new members into its rewards scheme. The total enrollment count surpassed 90,000 individuals last month.
There are 56 live dealer table games and 800 slot machines at Bally's Chicago.
While Bally's Corp. constructs its permanent integrated resort facility at the Freedom Center, the temporary casino will stay open. Early next month, the gaming company with its headquarters in Rhode Island will take over the former Chicago Tribune printing mill.
Bally's plans to open the casino and resort in downtown Windy City by 2026. A 500-room hotel, a 3,000-seat theater, ten dining options, and a casino with 4,000 gaming seats are all part of the proposed complex. In Illinois, Bally's Chicago will grow to be the biggest casino.
But finding the project's funding hasn't been simple. Bally's is still looking for roughly $800 million to help fund the $1.7 billion project. Wong claims that the project is still "on track to open" in September 2026 in spite of the budget shortage.
Bally's is happy to receive the much-needed and appreciated May income report for the temporary casino.The temporary gaming facility has substantially underperformed the casino company's and city officials' pre-opening revenue projections.Despite being the casino's finest month to date, May's earnings fell short of projections.
In 2024, the city projected that players will win $242.7 million at the temporary Bally's Chicago, or around $20.22 million per month. The casino made $52.36 million, or around $10.47 million a month, from January to May.
Bally's, which will take over ownership of the Freedom Center next month, will prepare it for demolition, Wong told the Chicago Tribune. Tribune Publishing, the main firm of the media organization, received $150 million from Bally's for the land.
At a cost of $185 million, the Freedom Center debuted for business in 1982. The 659,000-square-foot building housed the printing of multiple publications. The Freedom Center served as the printing center for the Midwest distribution of The New York Times, Chicago Reader, and Chicago Sun-Times, in addition to the Chicago Tribune.
Since then, the publication of the newspapers has been moved to the Paddock Printing Center in Schaumburg, which is located roughly 10 miles northwest of O'Hare International Airport and northwest of the Chicago Loop.
In the event of a crisis at Schaumburg, Tribune authorities have kept three printing presses operating within the Freedom Center. However, after several weeks of productive printing at Paddock, the publishing house intends to turn off the presses at Freedom Center on Sunday night.
