Reno Prosecutor Caught Pants Down in Peppermill Casino ‘Lewdness’ Case

According to court documents, Kenneth Ching, a former deputy district attorney for Washoe County, Nevada, was detained early on August 30 at Reno's Peppermill Casino on suspicion of indecent behavior. The DA's Office announced Ching's termination on Thursday.

According to a probable cause affidavit, police responded to allegations of two people reportedly having intercourse in public at the Peppermill at around 1:30 a.m.

According to the records, officers found Ching with his crotch exposed and his zipper undone, shocking bystanders.

"Indecent Things"

Authorities were then informed by a lady who was with Ching that the two had met earlier in the evening at the neighborhood cocktail bar Chapel Tavern. His date turned down Ching's suggestion to book a room at the Peppermill.

She claimed that Ching brought her to a restroom where he started caressing her after a drink unintentionally fell on her clothing while she was inside the casino.

Ching was involved in "indecent things," according to a cocktail server who subsequently claimed seeing "excessive indecent exposure." Ching was later found by security personnel close to the valet area, when witnesses reported to police that he had pulled his pants down and was engaging in obscene behavior in front of visitors.

Ching was later found by security personnel close to the valet area, when witnesses reported to police that he had pulled his pants down and was engaging in obscene behavior in front of visitors.

According to surveillance film, as casino visitors pass by, Ching, with his shorts and underpants pulled down, thrusts his hips in a sexual manner while the woman is held against a door. Police were then informed by the woman that the act was consensual.

Ching was detained on one charge of lewdness before being freed on his own recognizance.

To avoid any conflicts of interest, the Washoe County District Attorney's Office first put Ching on administrative leave and forwarded the case to the Carson City District Attorney's Office. The agency soon acknowledged that it had fired him.

“The Washoe County District Attorney’s Office can confirm that earlier this week Mr. Ching was relieved of his duties as a Deputy District Attorney and is no longer employed with this office,” the DA’s Office said in a statement. “The criminal case against him is active and being prosecuted by the Carson City District Attorney’s Office. As such, we will not be providing any additional comment at the time.”

The Legal Elite

Ching, a former prosecutor, promotes himself on LinkedIn as a former law professor who held voluntary leadership positions for charity organizations and garnered accolades for his teaching and scholarship. Nevada Business Magazine has listed him as one of "Nevada's Legal Elite" five times.

Ching is undoubtedly aware that the allegation of "open or gross lewdness" carries a maximum sentence of 364 days in jail, a maximum fine of $2,000, and mandatory sex offender registration for first-time offenders.
